The Issue

In my own experience, I have noticed how much everyday life depends on digital devices, reliable internet access, and basic digital navigation skills. Even when internet access is available, inconsistent or unreliable connectivity can make it difficult to complete schoolwork, access information, or use essential online services efficiently. Reflecting on this has also led me to consider the experiences of individuals in rural and underserved communities who may face even greater barriers, including limited access to education and employment opportunities, challenges in accessing telehealth services, and difficulties communicating during emergencies.

Digital equity is a pressing social issue that affects quality of life and long-term opportunities for many individuals and families. While the digital divide is a broader national concern, rural and low-income communities continue to experience significant disparities in broadband availability, affordability, and digital literacy support. According to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), millions of Americans still lack access to reliable high-speed broadband internet, with rural communities disproportionately affected by gaps in infrastructure and service access.

To address this issue at the state level, this petition calls on local and state governments, telecommunications providers, schools, and community organizations to take meaningful action to expand digital access within our area. This includes investing in broadband infrastructure in underserved and low-income rural neighborhoods, increasing affordability through subsidies or assistance programs for low-income households, developing partnerships with local organizations to support digital literacy and skills training, and expanding public internet access through libraries and community Wi-Fi initiatives where feasible.

By signing this petition, you are supporting efforts to reduce local barriers to digital access while contributing to broader efforts to address digital inequity. Digital access is essential for participation in education, employment, healthcare, and civic life. Together, we can work toward a more inclusive digital future where all individuals in our community have the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their socioeconomic status or location.
