Bring back hazard pay!
The Issue
As our cases in Manitoba rise more each and every day, it is getting to me more dangerous to be employed working for the general public. Regardless of the capacity limits some businesses may have, there is still a risk of contracting COVID-19 and spreading it to other co-workers, customers, or those that the employee is living with. We are seeing our cases rise up to around 350 or 400 daily now, and we are seeing health officials beg for the government to put more restrictions on our province, and yet code critical red still does not require non-essential businesses to close, or at least mandate operating under strictly curbside pickup. Employees in essential businesses like grocery stores or pharmacies or even schools are not getting any sort of hazard pay even though it is absolutely necessary they are working. There used to be hazard pay for many grocery store employees back when there was only around 17 cases in Winnipeg, and now we’re FAR above that, and yet to the government, it is not big enough of a threat. There must be compensation given to ALL employees who are working with the general public (regardless of if they work for an essential business or not) as it is a huge risk, and many, although working for a non-essential business, have no choice but to work because their business is open and they are needing a source of income.
