Breathe Again: Make Nature Accessible for All

The issue

During Australia’s Black Summer, catastrophic bushfires scorched over 24 million hectares of land, displacing communities, destroying ecosystems, and filling cities with smoke for weeks. In the aftermath, nature became a reprieve — bush trails and coastlines offered a space to breathe, reflect, and begin to heal.

This experience highlights a broader truth: access to green and blue spaces is not a luxury — it is essential. These spaces are critical for individual wellbeing, community resilience, and preparing for the impacts of climate change.

In many urban areas around the world, access to nature is uneven. Some communities enjoy leafy parks and tree-lined streets, while others endure heat, concrete, and little green relief. In places like Western Sydney, for example, tree canopy cover can be as low as 9%, compared to over 40% in wealthier suburbs.

Urban greening is not just about beauty. It is essential infrastructure.

A mature tree can absorb up to 22 kilograms of carbon dioxide per year
Vegetation can reduce urban temperatures by up to 10°C
Time spent in nature improves mental health, reduces stress, and strengthens community connection
Yet, too many people live without access to these benefits.

This petition is not just about planting trees. It is about:

-Building resilience to climate impacts
-Promoting mental and physical health
-Expanding fair access to nature in all neighbourhoods
-Recognising nature as a vital part of climate adaptation and public wellbeing
People, communities, and leaders everywhere must come together to demand greener, healthier cities. We must invest in urban greening, restore natural spaces, and prioritise access to nature — especially in areas most affected by climate and social inequalities.

Sign this petition to support a greener, healthier, and more equitable future for everyone.
