Tougher restrictions around use of fireworks in public parks as per by laws
The Issue
According to the City of Brampton current by-laws, "fireworks are prohibited on sidewalks, streets, within City parks, school yards or any other public area". However, we have noticed that local residents have not been adhering to such rules, particularly late at night, which is disturbing local residents. This problem is prevalent in other wards.
Last night at 10.20 pm, at Bonnie Braes Park [the intersection of Llyod Sanderson Park and Bonnie Braes], there was a gathering of approx. 20-25 local residents lighting up fireworks. These local residents were not adhering to COVID-19 guidelines and the fireworks used were not short-range [those that travel no greater than 3 meters or 10 feet]. We as law abiding local residents tried to communicate to the crowd that such practice is in violation of both City of Brampton's firework and COVID-19 guidelines, however, the crowd was extremely hostile.
Despite having strong communication through all social media avenues, local residents are not understanding the importance of such bylaws. As such, I recommend the following to you and your peers:
Recommendation: The City of Brampton considers implementing signs which prohibit fireworks within City parks, school yards and other public areas.
Benefit: The cost of implementing these signs is immaterial, however, it is an effective means of communicating city by-laws, particularly to residents who do not have social media accounts or even follow the City of Brampton. Furthermore, as we approach the months of long-weekend leading up to fall, such signs will be useful in discouraging large gatherings of local residents at city parks, since the use of fireworks is prohibited [an effective approach in encouraging COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions].
