Update the disability logo to represent all disabilities

Update the disability logo to represent all disabilities
The Issue
The current ‘Disability Wheelchair Logo’ has been the designated International Symbol of Disability since 1974, which is almost 50 years. During this time there has been so many progressive changes in the UK, around disability.
We’ve welcomed the DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) in 1995, the recognition of British Sign Language in 2003, the Equality Act in 2010 that replaced the DDA, to legally protect all people against discrimination, including those with disabilities. We’ve welcomed the Access to Work Scheme since 1994, which funds support for those with disabilities to enable them to work and the Disability Confident Scheme launched in 2014 to remove barriers to disabled people in employment. We’ve also welcomed the FA disability football strategy (2004-2006) which was the first step in integrating disability football into the mainstream.
We’ve only mentioned a few, but I’m sure you will agree that the UK has experienced a lot of welcomed change supporting over 14 million people with a range of numerous disabilities. 80% of these disabilities are not visible and over 90% of disabled people don’t use a wheelchair.
In 2021 the ‘Disability Wheelchair Logo’, needs to be updated to represent the full range of disabilities including those who do use a wheelchair.
We have developed a new updated logo that represents the wide range disabilities and encompasses a D tick, which symbolises Disability Positive.
The updated logo will change the mindset around disability, remind people that not all disabilities are visible and help people to understand that they are entitled to use disabled facilities and services. This will encourage people to adopt more inclusive attitudes towards the range of disabilities, prevent disabled people from being challenged and fight the discrimination people face who ‘don’t look disabled.’
In 2021 we need to replace the outdated Disability Wheelchair Logo with an inclusive Disability Logo that accurately represents ALL disabilities.
