A second lockdown has very recently been announced and is now in full swing. This has left students paying for accommodation which they don’t really need. As a result of the pandemic, in most cases there is no face to face learning and as a result all teaching has been moved online and the so called student lifestyle is pretty much non existent, which means that there is no real point of having student accommodation. In my accommodation and I’m sure of many others, facilities such as gyms that are included as part of the accommodation have been completely closed until further notice, which is unfair as students are still having to pay for these faculties even though they don’t have access to them. Majority of students have decided to move back home for the lockdown period as there is no real need for them to stay in their accommodation . Unfortunately, a lot of the accommodation  contracts that students have agreed to, offer very limited early termination. In most cases, the tenant has to carry on paying the remaining rent instalments until a replacement tenant is found. This is ridiculous because the chances of a replacement tenant being found are very slim considering there is currently a lockdown. Therefore the students that have decided to move back home for the lockdown period are virtually paying for an empty room. I can’t believe that accommodation  companies are actually getting away with having these terms in their contracts . An example of an accommodation company that’s doing so is ‘Code’ in Leicester. I hope that we can unite and get enough signatures to make a change and at least one good thing can come out of 2020.
