Dear Supporter,
Back in 2012, Costco promised to phase out the use of gestation crates for all of the pork sold in its fresh department by 2022.
While that sounds great, dig a little deeper and it turns out that Costco's likely major suppliers tell a different story. Beyond 2022, these suppliers are committed to locking up mother pigs in gestation crates for the first six weeks after they are impregnated. That's one third of a her pregnancy cycle.
You can help by telling Costco to make good on its promise to be crate free:
- Leave a polite comment on Costco's Facebook page or
- Costco members call: 1-800-774-2678 - Option #1. Then option #4. Have your membership number handy.
Feel free to follow this script or come up with a polite version of your own:
Costco members: I became a Costco member because I appreciated your commitment to the humane treatment of animals in your supply chain. That's why I was disappointed to learn that your promise to go crate free by 2022 does not apply for the first six weeks of a mother pig's pregnancy. Please make good on your promise and commit to selling 100% crate free pork for a mother pig's entire pregnancy.
Non-members: I believe that grocery chains have a responsibility to ensure the humane treatment of the animals they profit from. That's why I was disappointed to learn that your promise to go crate free by 2022 does not apply for one third of a mother pig's pregnancy. Please make good on your promise and commit to selling 100% crate free for a mother pig's entire pregnancy.
Thank you for your support. We will keep you updated on the progress of this campaign.
