Dear Supporter,

Back in 2012 Costco told its suppliers they "want all of the hogs throughout our pork supply chain to be housed in groups ... and expect that this transition should be accomplished no later than 2022". Costco got a lot of great publicity when it made this announcement ... but where are they today? Have they followed through their their promise?

Let's take a look:

  • For starters, Costco recently changed its goal for achieving a complete transition away from gestation crates from by 2022 to "on or before December 31, 2022." How many more times will they extend their own deadline?
  • Even worse, while Costco says it wants a complete transition away from crates, it turns out that Costco's likely major suppliers tell a different a story. Beyond 2022, these suppliers are committed to locking up mother pigs in gestation crates for the first six weeks after they are impregnated. That's one third of the pregnancy cycle!

We need to get Costco to commit to ending the use of gestation crates for a mother pig’s entire pregnancy cycle. This is just minimal decency: allowing animals to walk around, stretch their legs, and socialize with others.

Here's how you can help:

  • Post on your own social media: Tell Costco you want to buy pork that is 100% crate free. Let them know how you feel about gestation crates, and why it's important to you that retailers finally put an end to this practice. Be sure to tag @Costco. Also use these hashtags:  #CostcoMembers #CostcoDeals #CostcoLife #CostcoFinds #CostcoCares
  • Leave a polite comment on Costco's Facebook page
  • Costco Members call: 1-800-774-2678  - Option #1. Have membership number handy.
