Dear Supporter,
If you are a Costco member we need your help!
For years Costco has been saying that it has a policy asking its suppliers to phase out gestation crates in favor of group housing by 2022. And, their goal is that "100% of the pork sold in our fresh departments is from open pen gestation housing."
While this sounds like a straightforward commitment to end the use of gestation crates, apparently it is not. It is a known common practice of major producers like JBS and Smithfield (brands in Costco's stores) that pigs live in gestation crates for the first 6 weeks after they are impregnated − that's one third of the pregnancy!
As a Costco member you have value. We are calling on you to use your influence as a Costco member to tell Costco to really require its suppliers to stop using crates for 100% of the time.
How You Can Help:
- Download this this letter or write your own. Include your name and membership number.
- Mail it to: Bob Huskey VP, Costco, 999 Lake Dr, Issaquah, WA 98027.
- Or even better, bring the letter with you the next time you go to Costco. Head for the red and white "Tell us What You Think" counter and simply drop the letter in the mail slot. (You should find this counter right by the entrance area, close to the member support desk.)
Costco members: Make your buying preferences known and opinions count! Together we can end this cruel practice once and for all.
