Birds don't belong in small enclosures! Support the closure of Virginia Lake Aviary!

The issue

An impartial zoologist's report from 2023 has aptly highlighted our community challenge: the design of our aviary prioritises human viewing over bird welfare. The birds therein are unable to live adequate lives which includes the ability to fly appropriate distances, forage and nest away from the public eye.

The cost to upgrade the aviary to a satisfactory level and the annual amount to keep it running has been identified as significant to rate payers and I for one would prefer that money put to a better use.  The council has committed to finding the current birdlife in the aviary, their forever homes in more fit for purpose environments which I believe is the best course of action.

Whanganui is rich with free-roaming bird life at Virginia Lake, a natural sanctuary that satisfies our curiosity and desire for bird viewing, without compromising their welfare.  The nostalgia of enjoying the bird life with our children, grandchildren at Virgina Lake cannot be taken away and will still be there for more precious memories in the future without the aviary.  I believe we have evolved as a society that respects animal life and stands strongly against confining them for mere human entertainment.

According to Animal Welfare Act of 1999 in New Zealand, animals are sentient, and owners and people in charge of animals are required to meet their animals' physical, health, and behavioural needs. However, the current conditions at the aviary are in contradiction with this spirit of animal welfare.

In light of all this, I urge you people to join me in supporting the council's decision to close the Whanganui Aviary. Our action is a step towards a society where animal welfare is a priority.
