The Issue

We, the undersigned, call for serious international action to address the growing mental health crisis associated with TikTok. We believe the platform's design is fundamentally incompatible with healthy human attention and well-being. Protect current and future generations. TikTok is more than just another social media app. It is built around an endless stream of extremely short videos that are algorithmically selected to maximize engagement. Every swipe presents something new. Every few seconds, the brain receives another burst of dopamine. Users can lose hours without realizing it. Human brains did not evolve to process thousands of rapidly changing pieces of information every day. Our attention was never meant to be fragmented into 15-second videos from morning until night. This constant flood of stimulation creates what many people experience as information overload, meaning the mind is overwhelmed by continuous novelty, entertainment, opinions, advertisements, trends, and emotional content. Many people can relate to opening TikTok "for just a few minutes" only to realize hours have passed. I recently checked my own screen time for TikTok and discovered that I had spent four hours in a single day scrolling TikTok. Four hours that could have been spent reading, learning a skill, spending time with family, enjoying nature, or simply resting without constant stimulation. That realization made me question not just my own habits, but the design of the platform itself. This is not merely an issue of personal discipline. TikTok's recommendation algorithm has been engineered to hold attention for as long as possible. It learns users' interests with incredible speed and continuously feeds them personalized content designed to keep them engaged. When billions of dollars are invested into making it harder to stop scrolling, individual willpower alone cannot solve the problem. Many users report reduced attention spans, difficulty focusing on school and work, increased anxiety and depression, poor sleep, constant comparison with others, and a feeling that they cannot put their phone down. Children and teenagers, whose brains are still developing, may be more vulnerable to these effects. Society is beginning to normalize spending several hours each day consuming hundreds, even thousands of short videos. That should concern all of us. There was a time before TikTok existed. People built friendships, developed hobbies, played outside, read books, learned instruments, volunteered, explored their communities, and created meaningful memories without endlessly scrolling through algorithmically selected content. Life did not stop before TikTok. In many ways, it was healthier. Supporters often argue that TikTok provides entertainment, education, and income for content creators. While those benefits exist, they do not outweigh the public health concerns created by a platform specifically designed to maximize user engagement. Those who earn income through TikTok have talents and skills that can be applied elsewhere. Creativity, communication, photography, filmmaking, teaching, comedy, music, and entrepreneurship all existed long before TikTok and will continue to exist without it. Society has adapted before when industries changed, and it can do so again. This petition is about opposing business models that profit by capturing as much human attention as possible, often at the expense of mental health. We call on governments worldwide to investigate the long-term psychological effects of endless short-form video platforms. Recognize excessive algorithm-driven engagement as a public health issue. Protect children and teenagers from highly addictive recommendation systems. Our attention is one of our most valuable resources. Imagine what millions of people could accomplish if even a fraction of that time were redirected toward education, relationships, creativity, volunteering, meaningful work, or simply enjoying the real world. Social media is not real life. The world functioned before TikTok. It can function after TikTok. Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is to put down our phone, step outside, breathe fresh air, connect with the people around us, and remember that life is happening without the screen. If you believe technology should serve humanity instead of exploiting human attention, please sign this petition and encourage others to do the same.
