I have always cherished the privacy and freedom that comes with living in Lumpkin County. This place is not just where I live; it's my home, my sanctuary. But now, the increasing use of Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) cameras threatens that sense of security. I’m joining this movement because these cameras have been installed without sufficient public debate and pose a serious threat to our privacy and civil liberties.

ALPR cameras are touted as tools for enhancing safety and assisting law enforcement. While their intentions may be noble, studies have shown that these cameras do far more than simply catch traffic violators. According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, data collected by ALPR cameras can be stored for years and shared with a wide array of agencies—essentially tracking our every movement without our knowledge or consent. This mass collection of data infringes on our right to privacy and opens doors to potential abuses.

Moreover, a 2015 report by the Brennan Center for Justice found that the effectiveness of ALPRs in reducing crime is questionable. Communities that have deployed these cameras have not consistently seen the promised reduction in crime rates. Instead, the presence of constant surveillance has left residents feeling watched and uneasy. We cannot compromise our basic rights for technology that doesn't guarantee better safety outcomes.

There are alternatives to ALPR cameras that can ensure safety without undermining privacy. Community policing strategies that focus on building trust and cooperation between law enforcement and residents can be far more effective. Enhanced lighting in high-crime areas, neighborhood watch programs, and improved public awareness strategies are all potential solutions that respect our civil liberties.

Our local officials have a duty to protect the interests and rights of their constituents. We must make our voices heard now before this invasive technology is further implemented into our lives. Let’s come together as a community to protect our fundamental right to privacy and demand the removal of ALPR cameras in Lumpkin County.
