Ban the Oscars from awarding movies that use AI

The Issue

The Oscars faced criticism this year for awarding many movies that claimed the use of AI within their production, such as Emilia Pérez and A Complete Unknown. Most notably, Adrien Brody was awarded Best Actor for the Brutalist, despite using AI to alter his voice in order to improve his Hungarian accent.

I believe this to be a disingenuous display of unprofessionalism, and an insult to the acting industry. Adrien Brody was cast in a role for which he was clearly not fit and had his acting “improved” with the use of AI, instead of hiring another actor who could actually give an accurate portrayal of a Hungarian character. This shows the extent to which some productions will go to avoid hiring hardworking talent or proper voice training professionals, which therefore causes the decline in job opportunities for those looking to get into film and production industries.

Many actors, filmmakers, writers and other crew members are already struggling to make a living from their work, now made especially hard by the growing use of AI to replace their talents. By allowing movies such as the Brutalist to be handed prestigious awards, it sends a message to the rest of the industry that AI is an appropriate tool to use, despite the damage it will cause to the industry as a whole.

The Oscars should not be allowed to send this message given their influence in the filmmaking sphere, and I believe that any movie guilty of using AI to “enhance” their productions should not be allowed to participate in these award presentations.

Many other movies that were made by teams of hardworking individuals deserve to get recognition for preserving industry skill and talent, and should not be shunned by corrupt voters in favour of cutting corners.

My goal with this petition is to demand that the Oscars ban any movie found to have used AI in their production in place of real, human talent.
