Ban Streaming Services, AI, Digital Storefronts and Social Media in Australia
The issue
Once upon a time, between 2001 and 2015, life was simpler and, to many of us, better. We lived in a world where DVDs were cherished, where human engagement was, in many ways, stronger, and where technology hadn't yet wrapped itself so tightly around our everyday lives. The march of technological progress has brought us many conveniences like streaming services, digital storefronts, AI, and social media platforms, but in exchange, we face significant losses.
Due to increasing use of these services, many of us find ourselves lost in a world we don't quite recognize. A recent study reveals how human beings prefer consistency and are uncomfortable with too much change. Many of us long to step into a store and pick a DVD from a fully stocked shelf, or to meet friends in person rather than via a social media platform.
And even more importantly, the adoption of modern technologies like AI are causing a substantial job shift, leading to a surge in unemployment as jobs previously performed by humans are now being automated. Human effort, which used to be treasured and valued, seems to be progressively replaced by AI algorithms.
For these reasons, we urge the Australian Government to consider a hard ban on technologies like streaming services, AI, digital storefronts, and social media. By doing so, we can help preserve the intimacy, warmth, and authenticity of human connections - amidst shopping, work, and social interactions - that we enjoyed for the longest time. After all, what's the point of technological progress if it comes at the cost of our own happiness and social purpose?
This is a Big Ask, but anything is possible. It Might Take a Quarter of Australia's Population and several years, but our national pride against modernity is strong. Tradition is the Clenser. We Can't Go Forward, We Must Go Back
Please support this petition if you agree that the human experience cannot be replaced and that we must strive to protect the essence of our societal interpersonal interactions.
