Ban Ocean Trawling Worldwide

The Issue

The ocean is the lifeline of our world, and we believe that it is important to stop something so cruel and unnecessary as ocean trawling, which is damaging our ecosystem and a delicate balance, as well as being fuelled by greed. We believe that in order to save our world, we need to save our ocean; and this is the first step to doing so. If we all contribute and do our part. As a consumer, demand to only buy seafood that has not been fished through these cruel bottom trawling activities.

Ocean trawling is a practice that involves dragging large nets through the ocean. It indiscriminately scoops up marine life, leading to the destruction of vital ecosystems and habitats, wiping out entire fish populations, and harming species that are already endangered. This not only impacts marine biodiversity but also disrupts the food chain that millions of creatures depend on. If we bulldozed the Amazon Rainforest, it would cause outrage - but we do this thousands of times a day to our oceans.

Studies show that ocean trawling constantly disturbs the seabed, releases carbon stored in the marine sediments, and accelerates climate change. According to National Geographic, the practice of bottom trawling releases one billion metric tons of carbon annually—more than global aviation emissions.

The economic loss due to trawling is also substantial, as it destroys coral reefs and seagrass that are crucial to coastal communities' livelihood through tourism and fisheries. Furthermore, the Environmental Justice Foundation has reported that trawlers are often used illegally and without proper regulation, leading to significant financial loss for local fishers who rely on traditional fishing techniques. What’s even more outrageous, is that trawling is legal in almost every country.

Concrete action from governments worldwide is needed. By banning ocean trawling, we can protect marine biodiversity, restore ocean health, and ensure that our marine resources are sustainable for future generations. It's time to make a change. Take action now to protect our oceans.

As someone who has a 12 year old inquisitive and curious daughter, growing up in a beautiful world like this, but knowing that she might not have a future because of our actions that have passed and due to the actions continuing today, is a harsh realisation. Observing the world around us, we run away from the truth. It’s a hard truth to face the idea that we may be the reason that the world (our home) as we know it, and the incredible things it holds, will not exist. But, I know we can change. We have much more power over the world than we realise. We can change. We have the power to save the world, but at the same time we have the power to destroy it. Which one will you choose to do?

Sign this petition to urge lawmakers to ban ocean trawling globally and preserve our planet's precious marine environments for future generations.

”The ocean’s power to heal is astonishing. If we just give it the space, it can recover.” - David Attenborough
