The Issue

Living in a time of rapid urban development, modern agricultural practices, and commercial greed, we are witnessing the disappearance of our honeybees and native pollinators; insects that are crucial not only for our ecosystems but also for our food systems. Ohio, a state rich in biodiversity and agriculture, is at the crossroads of this crisis.

Neonicotinoids, a group of chemicals designed to protect crops, are having a catastrophic effect on non-target insect populations, especially pollinators. Reports from organizations such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reveal that these insecticides are linked to pollinator decline, including the critical honeybees which are responsible for pollinating approximately one-third of our food supply. The widespread use of these chemicals endangers not only Ohio's environment but also its agricultural economy, which heavily relies on pollinator activity.

Research from the University of Minnesota indicates that neonicotinoids not only threaten insects but also pose risks to human health. Traces of these pesticides have been found in water systems, food, and even human urine samples, raising concerns about potential impacts on neurological health. With Ohio's rich agricultural landscape, the stakes are high.

Our state has the power to lead by example. By banning the use of neonicotinoids in agriculture, Ohio can safeguard its ecosystems, protect its pollinators, and ensure healthier food systems for future generations. France took such steps by banning these chemicals in 2018, paving the way with successful alternatives that maintained agricultural productivity while promoting a healthier environment.

Ohio must take action now. We urge lawmakers and agricultural bodies to support this ban and invest in sustainable and effective alternatives. By protecting our precious pollinators, we are securing the future of our food, our health, and our environment.

By standing up to the prophylactic use of neonicotinoid insecticides, we can eliminate a significant threat to these incredibly vital insects and, in turn, help save our environment. Stand with us to demand a healthier, more sustainable Ohio. Sign this petition to ban neonicotinoid insecticides in our state and protect our pollinators and ecosystems. Let's Save the Bees!
