The issue

In many restaurants and grocery stores around the world, live fish and shellfish are kept in tanks up until the moment they are selected for consumption or purchase. While this practice is often advertised as a way to guarantee freshness, it is also a cause of significant distress and suffering to these living creatures.

Marine animals such as lobsters, crabs, and fish are kept in small, confined spaces, often with inadequate water quality and without enrichment. This can cause them undue stress and pain, effectively subjecting them to a slow death. Conditions like overcrowded tanks and poor water quality can lead to diseases and infections, further decreasing their quality of life.

Numerous studies have shown that aquatic creatures are capable of feeling pain and distress. According to a study published in the Journal of Experimental Biology, many fish exhibit signs of awareness and cognitive abilities. Other research, such as the 2005 European Food Safety Authority report, suggests that decapod crustaceans like crabs and lobsters can experience suffering in a manner similar to vertebrates.

Furthermore, the cruelty witnessed in these live displays is unnecessary. Modern methods of preserving seafood's freshness do not require the animal to stay alive until the point of sale. Innovative freezing and chilling techniques can ensure that seafood remains fresh without causing unnecessary suffering.

Several successful legislative examples can be pointed out: Switzerland and New Zealand have banned the boiling of live lobsters without stunning them first due to concerns about their welfare. Similar bans and guidelines could be enforced globally to ensure that seafood freshness does not come at the expense of animal welfare.

It is time for restaurants and grocery stores to adopt more humane practices. This petition seeks to ban live seafood tanks in these establishments, urging them to adopt ethical methods of sourcing and storing seafood. This change begins with recognizing the unnecessary hardship these creatures endure.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for a compassionate approach that prioritizes ethical treatment of all living creatures. Support our cause and demand that food establishments prioritize animal welfare over outdated practices of display and sale. Please sign and share this petition to help put an end to this inhumane practice.
