PREVENT YOUNG GIRLS FROM BEING SEXUALLY ABUSED

PREVENT YOUNG GIRLS FROM BEING SEXUALLY ABUSED
The Issue
Dear Secretary General of the United Nations,
Dear Prime Minister of The United Kingdom, and
Dear Prime Minister of Pakistan,
It will not have escaped your respective attentions that grooming and sexual abuse of young girls is running through every level of society.
For an incredibly long time, victims of such abuse have been crying out for someone to listen to their plight, and bring the perpetrators to justice.
One of the main reasons we are experiencing this epidemic of grooming and sexual abuse is due to the total failure of the relevant authorities and agencies over many decades to address the issue.
The abuse is happening at all levels, including in schools, hospitals, sports clubs, places of worship and also in people’s homes.
The perpetrators range from ordinary family members, teachers, trusted community leaders and all the way up to high profile celebrities, politicians and international peacekeepers.
The United Nations Central African Abuse Scandal, the UK Rotherham Report and the Pakistan Kasur Incident should be sufficient evidence that this problem needs to be tackled as a top priority - and with immediate effect.
Millions of young girls’ lives have been ruined by this abuse; and we cannot idly sit by to see millions more experience the same predicament.
Grooming and abuse typically deprive a girl of her education, right to development and growth, exposes her to health risks and gender-based violence.
For many girls, this leads to them joining gangs and becoming involved in a culture of drugs, alcohol, theft, prostitution, self-harm and usually culminates in them being sent to prison. Some girls may well have already committed suicide by this stage.
Nobody would want any of this to happen to their own daughter, and we as a society need to act as the "collective parents" of every single young girl in the world.
The analysis, on young girls being sexually abused, done by various organisations suggests that:
- 1 out every 4 girls will be sexually abused before her 18th birthday.
- 93% of the time, the abuser is a relative or a person of trust.
- Over 80% of abuse is carried out at the home of the victim or the abuser.
Society is not prepared to tolerate this any longer.
As such, we ask you to:
- Arrange for the investigation of all allegations of historic child sexual abuse,
- Ensure that any inquiry conducted is totally independent of the organisation being scrutinised,
- Bring all perpetrators of historic child sexual abuse to account,
- Tighten laws in order to have punishments that fit the crime, and
- Commit that in future all allegations of child sexual abuse will be taken seriously by authorities.
Together we can and will rid this evil from society.
