Ban Inhumane Traps

The Issue

Why We Must Stop Using Inhumane Mouse Traps — And What We Can Do Instead
Inhumane mouse traps—such as glue boards, snap traps, and rodenticides—pose serious risks not only to rodents, but also to human health, pets, and wildlife. These traps don't just cause immense suffering for the animals they catch; they can also contribute to the spread of dangerous diseases. For example, rodents trapped on glue boards often excrete urine and feces in distress, increasing the risk of exposure to pathogens such as hantavirus, salmonella, and leptospirosis. Rodenticides and snap traps also carry risks: poisons can be ingested by pets or scavenging wildlife, and snap traps can injure unintended animals.

Switching to humane traps is a smarter, more responsible solution. Here’s why:

  • No unnecessary suffering: Humane traps are designed to capture animals alive without injury.
  • Better for human health: Reduces contamination from excrement and blood, making cleanup safer and easier.
  • Safer for pets and wildlife: No risk of accidental injury or poisoning to non-target animals.
  • Reusable and cost-effective: Many humane traps can be used multiple times, saving money over time.
  • Cleaner and more discreet: No graphic or disturbing sights of animals suffering in visible traps.
  • Helps prevent infestations: More effective long-term strategies can be developed alongside humane capture.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) recommends contacting a licensed Nuisance Wildlife Control Specialist (NWCS). These professionals are trained to handle rodents and other wildlife humanely and are required to follow legal and ethical euthanasia protocols if relocation is not allowed.
