Ban GoGuardian

Ban GoGuardian
The Issue
As a middle school student who values privacy and autonomy, I am deeply troubled by the use of GoGuardian in our educational system. Not only does it invade my personal information, but it also breaches the privacy of my classmates. It gives our teachers full control over our computers, even when we are diligently working on our assignments.
GoGuardian is supposed to help educators ensure that students remain focused and safe while online. However, this software goes beyond safeguarding our educational journey. By infiltrating our computers, it compromises our ability to conduct research and complete projects without fear of unwarranted surveillance.
Consider the implications of a tool that allows someone else to access your browsing history, monitor your keyboard strokes, and even take control of your device. This not only infringes on our personal freedom but also stifles our creativity and ability to think independently. It's essential that our schools foster an environment of trust, where students can learn and thrive without feeling like they are constantly watched.
Moreover, evidence suggests that excessive monitoring can actually hinder the learning process. According to a study published in the Education Journal, students exposed to high levels of surveillance often report increased stress and anxiety, which can deter academic performance and motivation.
We understand the importance of maintaining a secure and focused digital learning environment. However, we believe there are more ethical and less intrusive ways to achieve these objectives. Employing software that respects student privacy while still providing necessary oversight should be our goal.
We propose working with educational technology experts to develop or implement alternative solutions. These should focus on empowering students, promoting digital citizenship, and building skills that encourage responsible use of technology, ensuring they are prepared for the digital world beyond the classroom.
This petition is a call to action for school administrators, educators, and policymakers to reconsider the use of invasive monitoring tools like GoGuardian. Let's work together to create a more supportive, trust-based learning atmosphere.
Please join us in urging school boards to ban the use of GoGuardian and explore more respectful, student-centered approaches. Sign this petition to protect student privacy and promote a positive educational experience for all.
