The issue

The regular spraying of glyphosate and fluazifop—two chemicals known for their hazardous effects on health—is a persistent threat to the wellbeing of our local families, pets and wildlife.

For years, studies have highlighted the risks associated with these herbicides: eye irritation, skin problems, gastrointestinal issues, and even links to serious conditions like cancer, neurotoxicity, and reproductive toxicity. The use of a simple warning sign urging people to avoid the area while wet is a grossly insufficient measure of protection. These chemicals don't just stay put—they spread through the air, seep into the soil, and infiltrate our waterways, putting the entire ecosystem at risk.

According to reputable sources, glyphosate and fluazifop are associated with a variety of severe health effects. Glyphosate, in particular, has been classified as "probably carcinogenic" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as early as 2015. Moreover, in residential areas like ours, children play and pets roam freely, making the risk of exposure alarmingly high.

Numerous cities around the world have committed to reducing or entirely banning these hazardous chemicals in favour of safer and more sustainable methods for park maintenance. Mechanical weeding, mulching, and the use of non-toxic solutions can effectively manage unwanted vegetation without compromising public health.

Let’s put the health and safety of our community first by banning the use of glyphosate and fluazifop across City of Joondalup. Please sign this petition and push for immediate action from our local council. With your support, we can protect our families, pets and environment.
