Ban Cruel Gestation Crates for Pigs in New York - Pass Bill A341/S7611

Ilana LisusFayetteville, NY, United States
Created June 17, 2025

The Issue

Pregnant pigs in New York are still being confined in gestation crates—metal cages so small they can’t turn around or lie down comfortably for months at a time. They develop open sores from rubbing against the cold metal bars. They chew the bars until their mouths bleed. They live in forced stillness on cold, hard, concrete. This form of confinement is so cruel that it’s already been banned in 10 other states, including California, Colorado, and Massachusetts.

Yet New York continues to lag behind. The so-called “progressive” NY state.

Bill A341/S7611 would ban these crates and require farmers to provide basic humane conditions—allowing pigs to stand, lie down, and turn around freely. This bill reflects growing public support for animal welfare and scientific consensus that extreme confinement causes long-term pain, stress, and physical harm.

Pigs are intelligent, emotional animals. No living being should be locked in a cage barely larger than their body for most of their life.

We, the undersigned, call on the New York State Legislature to immediately pass Bill A341/S7611 and ban the use of gestation crates. New York must take a stand for compassion, progress, and humane treatment of animals.
