Ban Candy as Student Rewards in Classrooms, Replace with Healthy Snacks or School Supplies

Ban Candy as Student Rewards in Classrooms, Replace with Healthy Snacks or School Supplies
The Issue
As a concerned parent in Orange, CA, I observe the daily routine of my elementary school-going child who is regularly 'rewarded' with candy for various achievements in the classroom. My intention is not to undermine the importance of recognizing and encouraging students' efforts. However, several credible studies have indicated the negative impact of excessive sugar on children's short and long-term development.
High sugar consumption among children is linked to impaired cognitive function, poor dental health, and increased risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. According to a report by The New England Journal of Medicine, the prevalence of these health issues in children has dramatically increased over the past decades, closely related to the greater intake of sugar-rich foods.
Sugar-loaded candies are far from being the right motivation for our kids. Considering their detrimental effects, I believe there are healthier and more beneficial alternative rewards we can offer. Substituting candy rewards with healthy snacks or school supplies not only promotes good health and academic growth but also encourages a lifelong practice of making better dietary choices.
We need to act now to better our children's future. I call upon parents, educators, and policymakers to endorse this petition to ban candies as rewards in classrooms. Let's cultivate a wholesome and enriching environment for our kids. Please sign this petition and help us to make this significant change.
