Ban Bright White Lights on Roads for Road Safety and Eye Health

The Issue

To the Government of India, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), and concerned authorities

We, the undersigned, express our deep concern regarding the escalating use of excessively bright white lights (such as high-intensity LEDs and Xenon headlights) in vehicles, which pose significant dangers to road safety and public health.

Problem Statement:

In recent years, the increase of ultra-bright white lights in cars and motorcycles has created a hazardous driving environment. These glaring lights cause considerable discomfort and pose severe risks, particularly at night. The intense brightness blinds drivers, leading to poor visibility and increased accident risk. Additionally, prolonged exposure strains the eyes, causing headaches, blurred vision, and potential long-term retinal damage—especially affecting senior citizens, children, and those with pre-existing eye conditions.

Key Issues:

Increased Risk of Accidents: Bright lights impair the vision of drivers and pedestrians, making safe navigation challenging.

Eye Health Risks: Intense lights cause eye fatigue, headaches, and long-term vision problems.

Lack of Regulation Enforcement: Current road safety rules inadequately address the use of these lights, allowing their unchecked spread.

Call to Action:

We urge the authorities to implement the following measures:

Ban excessively bright white lights: Prohibit the use of high-intensity LEDs and Xenon lights that do not comply with road safety standards.

Regulate headlight brightness: Enforce stricter controls to ensure vehicle headlights do not pose a risk to road users.

Raise public awareness: Educate the public about the dangers of bright headlights and promote the use of eye-friendly lighting, such as yellow or amber lights.

Increase penalties: Implement tougher penalties for non-compliance with road safety regulations regarding vehicle lighting.

Keep traditional halogen yellowish lights: Encourage the continued use of traditional halogen yellowish lights in vehicles, as they provide sufficient illumination without causing significant glare or eye strain.

Conclusion:

By implementing these measures, we can improve road safety, protect eye health, and create a safer, more comfortable driving experience for all. We call on concerned citizens to sign this petition and join us in advocating for this crucial change.

Together, we can make our roads safer and healthier for everyone.

Sincerely,
