Ban BabestationTV from being broadcasted on TV

The Issue

Context

Babestation is an adult chat television channel in the UK that has been in operation since 2002. The service is monetised by callers topping up their mobile phone with calling credit.

Example of a caller

While some people only call up the show for a bit of fun, many of the callers develop an unhealthy parasocial relationship with their idol. This is in large part due to the live/human element of Babestation, which can deceive some into feeling a genuine connection. One of these people is a man in his early 50s.

For the sake of confidentiality, we won't disclose his identity. This person has called the show on a frequent basis for over a decade, he believes the idols (especially one in particular) genuinely love him and he treats them more like intimate friends or therapists. Despite how he may feel, it's very much a one-sided relationship.

The morality of Babestation.

While we do not condone or justify the actions of callers, Babestation also have their own moral responsibility for their staff and fans. This particular caller is known to have a neurological disability and be very lonely, as a result he frequently pesters the idols on their personal social medias.

The morally appropriate thing would be to stop accepting his calls, but unfortunately it's these people who make Babestation a lot of money. It's not only bad for callers who waste their money on instant gratification instead of addressing mental health problems. It's also bad for the models who are guilt-tripped and harassed in their free time.

The reality of the porn industry

Babestation is just one drop in a toxic ocean, here are some of the other issues with pornography and the collective adult industry:

  • Porn gives people unrealistic expectations of sex and relationships
  • Porn causes problems for existing relationships
  • The adult industry's ties with human trafficking
  • Porn sites being known to host content involving minors
  • Porn sites being known to host spy cam footage
  • Porn dehumanizes people (especially women)
  • Not all porn stars are rich and some only join as a result of being forced into poverty

Unlike some other vices, porn doesn't just harm the person consuming it.
