However, these devices, often run by private companies like Flock Safety, misread plates around 10% of the time. Inaccuracies lead to wrongful detentions, infringing on our rights and consuming valuable time. Furthermore, these companies operate with virtually no restrictions or oversight, raising major privacy and ethical concerns.
The lack of regulation invites dangerous consequences. ALPRs, apart from being error-prone, accumulate sensitive information about innocent citizens, leading to potential misuse. In a place where freedom and privacy should be protected, such indiscriminate surveillance poses a significant threat.
