The Issue

Every day, disabled people face abuse simply because we’re disabled. The narratives pushed by programmes such as Jeremy Vine’s on BBC2 Radio 2 and Channel 5 fuel a hostile climate against individuals like me. Under the guise of "balanced debate," these shows perpetuate harmful stereotypes and encourage negative attitudes, making it seem acceptable to question and debate our existence and rights.

Disability-related abuse is an alarming reality for countless individuals in the UK. According to Scope, two-thirds of disabled people have experienced negative judgment or discrimination in the past year. This media-fuelled environment emboldens people to express disdain and employ derogatory behaviour towards the disabled community. Such narratives do not promote healthy discourse; they incite hatred and mistrust, leading to online abuse and real-world harassment, often escalating to threats, as I have personally experienced.

I demand that Jeremy Vine's programmes be scrutinised and ultimately axed if they continue to broadcast biased and divisive content against disabled people. It is crucial that our media outlets foster understanding and promote inclusion rather than drive wedges in our society.

The BBC and Channel 5 must hold themselves to higher standards of unbiased reporting. They have a responsibility to ensure their content does not perpetuate harm against any marginalised community. We need programming and debate that reflects the dignity and value of every individual, regardless of ability.

Concrete steps must be taken to ensure the narratives broadcast inspire respect rather than resentment. Let's call for proper oversight and accountability for shows that have a profound impact on public attitudes.

If they are unable to meet these standards, then the shows must be axed.

By signing this petition, you can help bring attention to this issue. Let's protect our community from being maligned by the very platforms meant to inform and educate us. It's time to demand change and ensure our voices are heard. Sign this petition to call for an end to media narratives that perpetuate violence and hatred against disabled individuals.

Note: we want ITN, BBC and Channel 5 to take action.
