The Issue

As you may already be aware, Avon North America under previous leadership sometimes used generative AI to create content for Avon brochures and marketing materials, even going so far as to generate AI models for cover images. Many Ambassadors/Representatives believe that the decision to use AI for these purposes is disgraceful and antithetical to the values that Avon stands for: uplifting women, emphasis on human connection, improving human lives through opportunity, and creative expression as individuals. The undersigned Ambassadors ask Regent's Avon leadership to make a commitment for Avon to cease all use of generative AI in the creation of brochures and any other marketing materials moving forward. If you truly care about making Avon great, this is one vital business decision that could prove that Avon puts people over profits.

Why don't we want Avon to use AI?

1. You cannot create an AI woman and claim to uplift women at the same time.

Customers want to see real women. In addition, professional models are human beings with skills worthy of respect. If Avon loses it's sense of humanity in the brochures, how can Ambassadors feel confident in promoting such brochures to the customers that trust us for our human connection?

2. Generative AI technologies work by scraping data from real images and artwork without consent or compensation, thereby profiting off of stolen art.

Artists are human beings with basic economic needs and skills worthy of respect. It is anti-human to utilize technologies that directly harm artists on such a large scale. Avon can and should be better than that.

3. Generative AI technologies are a huge threat to our environment.

Data centers for generative AI consume huge amounts of electricity compared to other types of data centers, putting a strain on the power grids of nearby communities, and worsening air pollution in the process. In addition, AI data centers use water to cool the servers, with most still using inefficient systems that waste massive amounts of water, in some cases up to 5 million gallons per day for a large facility. This puts an enormous strain on water supply for nearby communities that need it to survive.

As Avon Representatives, we care about our communities. Customers like to support companies which care about them as well.

Thank you for your consideration of this petition. Please do what is right, so that Ambassadors can to be proud to represent this company.
