The Issue

My grandson, a 24-year-old high functioning autistic individual with intellectual impairment, is currently in trouble with the law.He is currently in jail and the state government not federal are trained for a person with his disabilities.  His neurodivergent disorder impairs his capacities for critical thinking and understanding of consequent outcomes. This situation is not unique to him. Many like him are navigating similar challenges, facing potential incarceration due to actions resulting from their cognitive conditions, not mal-intent.

The justice system is not currently adequately protecting the rights of autistic individuals and those with intellectual disabilities. These individuals are disproportionately susceptible to misunderstandings, coercion, and unjust treatment within our legal framework. We are calling for legislative changes to safeguard their rights and well-being. The Department of Justice, in its November 2021 report, showed that 32% of prisoners and 40% of jail inmates report having at least one disability. This concerning figure emphasizes the urgent need for protective measures and alternative legal responses for neurodivergent individuals.

This petition is more than a plea for justice; it is a call for humane understanding and the extension of compassionate treatment for persons with disabilities within our justice system. We must consider alternative corrective measures that acknowledge their unique circumstances. Change is imperative to protect such vulnerable persons no less deserving of justice and safeguarded dignity than we are. Please sign this petition to advocate for a justice system that equally protects all its subjects, regardless of their psychological abilities.
