During the summer of 2019/2020 wildfires in large parts of Australia destroyed more than 46,000,000 acres of land, (which is roughly the size of Syria) along with 3,500 houses and were responsible for the deaths of 34 people. These fires could have been much less devastating if cool burns were performed in the affected areas before fire season began. Cool burns (also known as cultural or quick burns) which do not threaten animals or plants, were performed by Indigenous Australians across the country to reduce the amount of fuel available for any bushfires which did arise. After World War II, Indigenous Australians where lured from their homes with the promise of more work and education, thus resulting in the reduction of fire management and the increase of large fires in Australia. Not only does this threaten the biodiversity of our country, it also increases our Carbon Dioxide and Carbon Monoxide emissions, adding to greenhouse effect and climate change. By reintroducing cool burns to areas such as those which were burned this past summer, we can reduce the devastation of bushfires therefore, reducing the amount of greenhouse gases we emit and protecting the biodiversity of Australia.
