ANU: Bring back the CRS/CRN system for Semester 2 2021

ANU: Bring back the CRS/CRN system for Semester 2 2021
The issue
As of this week, most of the country has been plunged into lockdown or faced greater restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic and escalating conditions caused by the Sydney outbreak of the Delta variant. Despite these circumstances, there has been no public announcement regarding bringing back the CRS/CRN grading scheme.
As the pandemic worsens and continued to negatively impact students' mental health, employment and educational outcomes, it is only fair that the ANU brings back the CRS/CRN grading scheme to give us peace of mind during these volatile conditions and allow us to focus on maintaining our wellbeing during uncertain times.
ANU implemented the CRS/CRN system in 2020 to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and the sudden shift to online classes. This ensured that student's transcripts and results would reflect their performance during normal times, rather than those during the stress of a mass public health emergency.
In the past week, students have faced:
- A sudden shift to online classes for the foreseeable future due to the ACT implementing lockdown conditions until September 2.
- Disruptions and changes to assignment schedules in response.
- Restrictions in accessing university or residence-based resources such as printing facilities and libraries, as well as disruptions to on-campus internet services.
- Risks to employment and income including those caused by specific restrictions for students at ANU Halls working in hospitality and retail industries.
- Challenges/delays in accessing government income assistance and subsidisation.
- Difficulties accessing necessities including food and toiletries due to panic buying conditions in several states across Australia. Additionally, problems for on-campus students in accessing kitchen and laundry facilities.
- Social isolation causing or exacerbating mental health issues or poor wellbeing.
Given the uncertain and stressful conditions COVID-19 continues to impose; The ANU should bring the CRS/CRN system back to reduce the negative impacts on health and wellbeing and allow students to cope with the situation at hand.
