Australian Islamic College : Stop the blatant racism and prejudice against African student
The issue
Australian Islamic College : Stop the blatant institutional racism and prejudice against African students in your campuses. We request an external discipline audit into the alarming racial discrepancy in school suspensions/expulsions/discipline and for it to be made public knowledge. For too long the systemic racism faced by a portion of our Muslim students at our Islamic Colleges has been overlooked, pushed aside and hidden.
Somali/African/black students in our local Australian Islamic school have been facing the same issue of racism and prejudiced attitudes for years where there is a huge disparity between the numbers of suspensions/expulsions/tolerance between African students and others. We have seen hundreds of accounts where African students are given zero tolerance and immediately expelled from the college where others were given no such discipline. It is common place for students of African background to be more harshly dealt with and given no recourse where their non-African counterparts were either given a pass or less harsh discipline for the same or equal actions.
Black students are far more likely to be suspended than their non-black peers at Australian Islamic College
Blacks students are suspended at alarmingly higher rates that their non-black peers at the Australian Islamic College
Black students are punished at alarmingly disproportionate rates than their non-black peers at the Australian Islamic College
We are imploring the school to address this damaging and deep-rooted discriminatory attitudes and actions. The alienation of our students of African backgrounds - racism and prejudice- is leaving a damaging effect on our youth.
Our Islamic schools should be a beacon of unity where all students of every background, race and colour can have the opportunity to succeed as our religion dictates.
If you have been affected by this or witnessed this please sign this petition to demand action be taken. It has affected our past youth and will affect your future children, equality is part of our Islamic and Australian right.
*This petition is directed at the Kewdale, Thornlie and Dianella campus management structure, culture and practices and NOT at the Islamic community as a whole
*This petition and it's supporters acknowledge there are many wonderful and dedicated teachers and staff members at the Australian Islamic College
There is nothing more important than banding together to highlight the persistent institutional racism that plagues our education system.
Peace be upon you, AsSalamu Alaikum.
