Don’t Reopen Your Wet Markets China.

The issue

It’s often said that a societies attitude towards animals could often be an indicator for its sense of justice and kindness. I find these attributes sometimes lacking when it comes to China.

China’s economic rise is definitely fascinating and I’m sure there’s a lot of good lessons to be learnt from the Chinese people and their culture. Their growing middle class is booming and many have even started having animals as pets (which was in the recent past a luxury), but their attitudes generally towards most animals and wildlife is sadly lagging far behind their amazing economic growth, to say the least. China needs to take serious action with regards to what’s happening in their open ancient outdated wet markets.

To be fair, wet markets like the one in Wuhan exist also in many other countries but it’s the scale and size of modern China and the combination of its ancient cultural traditions of medicine, animal husbandry and culinary tastes that render it a unique incubator for some new terrible diseases.

As we all do our very best to get through this Covid19 crisis, we can’t lose sight of how we got here in the first place. China knew after SARS that its wet markets were a specific danger to their public health and allowed them to resume soon after that particular crisis died down. Since that time many have predicted that these wet markets were a real ticking time bomb for the start of another global novel virus.

We may all need to stand up and work worldwide to hold China accountable in making sure that these markets are forever changed permanently. They can no longer disregard the scientific facts that tell us mixing with exotic animals, and then eating them, isn’t just bad for wildlife, it can also become a breeding ground and transmitter of a global pandemic that can result into a great human disaster similar to what’s happening globally today.

We as citizens of this world and China’s global customers (China accounts for around 18% of the world’s GDP) call upon the Chinese people and government to take immediate action and close down their wet markets. No Business or Organization in the world is known to survive for very long if they don’t listen to the voice of their customers, we have all bought things from China and we are their customers and we ask them to listen and take immediate action in the interest of all humanity. It’s possible so please...Listen
