Anthony Albanese: Australia NEEDS safety standards for bassinets and baby sleep items

The issue

I had my first child in 2020 and while shopping for baby items I found a few things that shocked me: Australia has NO safety standards or testing for any bassinet to pass before it is able to be sold. (choice thankfully has tested some against international standards)

With the support and passion I saw from other parents after joining Safe Sleep Australia. I felt the need to try and change this.

Unlike cots sold in Australia that must meet Australian Standard AS/NZS 2172. Bassinets do not have any regulations or safety requirements that must be met in order for them to be sold.

On the 21st March 2021 CHOICE tested 33 Bassinets on the Australian market - out of those 33 bassinets 24 of them FAILED key safety standards.

5 out of 8 models tested revealed safety risks including potential suffocation and choking hazards, head and limb entrapment, insufficiently firm mattresses and sharp wicker splinters.

The Australian government NEED to put safety standards in place to help protect our children from unsafe products that can cause injury!
