The Issue

My grandmother, who is over 80 and in need of a caregiver, recently lost her housemate. With her lease ending, Hawthorne Apartment Group and The Retreat at Sedgefield in Greensboro, North Carolina, insist she owes additional fees due to a 60-day notice policy. This unexpected burden is both unfair and overwhelming for our family at this difficult time.

Policies are important, I understand that. However, when a loved one dies, families can't always prepare for a sudden financial strain. Death doesn't wait for a lease to end or for a notice period. This is where a compassionate approach could make all the difference. Instead of rigidly adhering to regulations, we need humane judgment that considers individual circumstances, especially for our seniors who are among the most vulnerable.

We are asking Hawthorne and The Retreat management to waive these fees, making transition smoother for seniors experiencing housing instability. It's about doing the right thing. Seniors shouldn't face additional stress when mourning and managing life changes. A community is characterized by its support for each other, particularly for those in their twilight years.

Let's demonstrate the power of community and the importance of protecting our seniors' rights. Sign this petition urging Hawthorne to review and revise its policy concerning seniors in transitions, ensuring fairness and compassion are prioritized over inflexible rules. Stand with us for #ProtectOurSeniors and #HousingJustice in Greensboro. Your signature can be a step toward real change and support for those who need it most.
