Arrest R.B.I. Governor, Guruvayoor Devaswom Chairman and mahout for torturing the Elephant

The Issue

Sir, Enclosed herewith is the photograph published by the Times of India newspaper yesterday in its financial news page on 15th February 2016. The photograph clearly shows that Mr. Raghuram Rajan (Governor of Reserve Bank of India) smiles as the mahout uses the banned Ankush (a weapon used by the mahout to give painful command to Elephant to prompt the animal to keep its trunk away from the body of other persons who approach to near to the animal) to keep the trunk of the Elephant away from the body of Mr. Raghuram Rajan and his family member. The Guruvayoor Devaswom had erected several notice boards inside the Guruvayoor Elephant camp to provide warning to the visitors to keep themselves away from Elephants tethered there. Similarly the Guruvayoor Devaswom had banned photography inside Guruvayoor Elephant camp with an intention to stop the spread of information about the unlawful practices and methods used for taming Elephants inside that sanctuary. But the same Guruvayoor Devaswom invited Mr. Raghuram Rajan to watch the presence of 56 Elephants kept inside that Elephant camp. Mr. Raghuram Rajan visited that Elephant camp with smiling face without expressing any displeasure on the unlawful way of treating them under scorching sunlight. As a member of Brahmin community, he must have simply expressed his displeasure over the cruel way in which the 56 Elephants are kept inside that Elephant camp violating all the Elephant preservation rules of India. But at the same time, his visit to that Elephant camp resulted in Elephant torture when he tried to pose himself with an Elephant at that Elephant camp along with his family members. The photograph clearly shows that the mahout uses the banned weapon Ankush (a weapon with sharp iron hook at its edge to provide pain on Elephants trunk) as the Elephant try to extent its trunk towards Raghuram Rajan. It is the basic instinct of an Elephant to move its trunk towards any object which move towards it. But the R.B.I Governor who went very near to the Elephants remain as a mute spectator even after witnessing the Elephant reeling under pain due to the unlawful action of the mahout. Such unlawful action on part of mahout, the R.B.I Governor is an offence as per the Wild Life Protection Act 1972 and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960. Therefore, I like to draw your urgent attention to order for the arrest of the R.B.I Governor and the mahout and the Chairman of Guruvayoor Devaswom for their unlawful activities inside Guruvayoor Elephant camp which happened on 13th February 2016.
