On January 10, 2016 my son Christopher John Ruiz- was murdered by a repeat drunk driver, named Robby Murk Cadman. The killer had a blood alcohol two times the legal limit, driving on a suspended license, had previous DUIs, had an uninsured vehicle, and was speeding the wrong way on an expressway killing Christopher horrifically. The killer was listed as a level 3 sex offender in Arizona and had a current conviction requiring him to a court ordered drug and alcohol accountability program. His final criminal act was murdering our child. Christopher was an outstanding person. He was devoted to friends and family, had a solid career and had many meaningful interests, pursuits and hobbies. All of these kept him happily busy and provided him with a life of fulfillment. During his 32 years on this Earth, he left a positive mark on so very many people. After losing his beautiful niece Hailey Madison at 7 years old to DIPG in 2013, an incurable childhood brain cancer, he began to dedicate time and funding to the research for cures to Childhood Cancer. He was actively involved in foundations such as #Hearts4Hailey. #Run2fight and Phoenix Children's Hospital Holiday gift project. It became his passion and gift to his niece, that he loved so deeply. We are asking for the help of the public. Drunk drivers, entering the Az. Freeways in the wrong direction are killing innocent people at alarming rates. We need change now. Dear Sirs; On January 10, 2016, Christopher Ruiz Jr. 'Buddy' was murdered on an Arizona freeway by a drunk driver named Robert Andrew Cadman. Christopher's murderer was driving on a suspended license, in an uninsured car, with a blood alcohol level 2x the legal limit. He had DUIs, drug and sexual assault offenses on his criminal record. However, he was free to be employed, drive and carry on with his life as if he was a law abiding citizen. That is until the day he murdered Christopher John Ruiz, 'Buddy' as his friends and family referred to him, in the most unimaginable and horrific way. Christopher Ruiz was hit head on by the killer, Robert Cadman, who was traveling the wrong way on the 303 freeway at speeds in excess of90 mph. The pain that the family must experience as a result of this negligence is unreal. Through countless hours of research, we have come to learn that the issue of wrong way driving on Arizona freeways is a major problem. Although we are unable to bring back the lives of the countless victims, such as Christopher that have been killed by drunk, wrong way drivers, we do have the ability to act in a proactive and assertive manner to bring awareness to this matter of public safety and to preserve the legacy of Christopher 'Buddy' Ruiz and others that have been killed. I am connecting with you because I need you to be our advocates. I need to know that you will stand alongside of us as we work tirelessly to ensure that this tragedy does not have to happen to other families. We want to work in collaboration with your offices to create safety measures and alerts which can serve to reduce the ability for people to travel the wrong way on the Arizona freeways and across the US in an initiative named the 'Buddy Alert'. The 'Buddy Alert' would create a warning system that a wrong way driver is heading towards them. The #BuddyAlert would create an awareness (much like the amber alert) to the sober driver, the ones that can make a clear decision to exit the freeway and avoid the most often drunk, wrong way driver. Bigger, lower signs as DPS proposes is useless. The drunk driver that killed Christopher drove the wrong way and was unfazed by lights coming towards him, horns blazing and sirens from DPS riding on the opposite side of the freeway. Larger, lower signs would have been useless, spikes are proven unsafe and the sensors remain to be in test phase. Let's stop these senseless murders now. Let's utilize the resources we have. It is my sincere hope that this initiative would serve to protect the lives of others and to prevent other families from being torn apart such as the family of Christopher 'Buddy' Ruiz and so many others in Arizona.
