Call to Terminate Licensing Privileges Afforded to Jack Wolfson

The Issue

Dear Faculty and Board Members,

I am writing you regarding the recent public statements made by board certified, practicing cardiologist Jack Wolfson. He currently holds a license to practice in Arizona, license #3761. Here are my primary concerns:

He is practicing and making recommendations beyond his scope of practice. Jack Wolfson is a cardiologist. He has no training in pediatrics, infectious disease, or even primary care. He is not qualified to make recommendations against vaccination. It is one thing to hold a personal belief, however, making false claims about vaccines based on no scientific evidence and publicly telling patients to question their doctors recommendations to get vaccinated is outrageous, and dangerous.

He is propagating false information, and withholding evidence based medical information. He recently made a public statement regarding a family that has been quarantined due to measles virus exposure. This family has a young girl who cannot receive vaccines due to leukemia. He states specifically, “It’s not my responsibility to inject my child with chemicals in order for a child be be supposedly healthy. As far as I’m concerned, it’s very likely that her leukemia is from vaccination in the first place.” This child has leukemia, therefore she is not eligible to receive vaccinations, so there is no way vaccines could have caused her leukemia, also there is absolutely no medical or scientific evidence that states vaccines cause leukemia. His statement directly contradicts current medical evidence and practice, and will only add to the already unnecessary fear of vaccination that some parents have. Again, this information is false, and he is propagating it.

He is ethically unsound. A second statement he made is even more alarming, “I’m not going to sacrifice the well-being of my child, it’s not my responsibility to be protecting their child.” Isn’t our sole responsibility as physicians to protect patients and the public health? If he does not feel that protecting the public is his responsibility, then I question why he is still being allowed to practice medicine. His views and statements are in direct violation of the Hippocratic Oath, in which we state to first do no harm. As a mother I find myself fearful because his statements and actions put my children at risk. As a physician, I am offended and angered at his statements because it violates the ethical principles that my fellow physicians and I have sworn to uphold, and it puts my patients in danger.

He is benefitting financially from the false information he tells patients. Jack Wolfson runs an Integrative Cardiology practice. He states this is a concierge practice and charges a hefty fee of around $750 for an office visit. He also sells natural supplements, which we know are not regulated by the FDA, and none of which have been proven to cure cardiovascular disease in sound clinical trials. He recommends these as treatments for his patients, and makes a profit off the sales of these products on his website, which is a direct conflict of interest.

I strongly believe in our medical boards, specialty boards, and licensing committees to ensure that practicing physicians are safe, uphold ethical and clinical standards of care, and protect the public health. He has clearly deviated from these principles. He is not practicing safe medicine, or protecting the public. It is up to us and our medical boards to police and prevent him from doing further harm. It makes no sense to let him practice, and then prosecute him only once an adverse outcome has happened. His practice will hurt patients and cost lives. We need to stop him now before something devastating occurs from his malpractice. Please consider revoking his license and certification, for the better protection of our patients and families.

Sincerely,

H. Cathy McLaughlin MD Diplomate, American Board of Urology
