Are You Waiting For Us To Die? Discrimination Against First Nations People of AUS.
The issue
Across Australia, ever since the first fleet, there has been an atrocious amount of racism and discrimination against First Nations people. With the main exception of the 1967 referendum, not many people have addressed and are aware of this injustice.
I strongly believe that one of the biggest causes of this pain, is the stolen generation. The stolen generations was a tragic event where many children were removed from their families by the government. Even though the government has publicly apologised, the trauma, guilt, and anger still exists. The government hasn't compensated those affected, making First Nations people believe that the government is waiting for them to die, hence the name of this petition. So, before you sign this petition, put yourself in the shoes of those affected, and think to yourself, "What if you never got to talk to my love ones again, what if your identity was stripped away, just because of my race, and how would you feel if you knew that neither you, or your family did nothing wrong".
The second main reason is racism against First Nations people by the public, which is really heartbreaking, because some people even fail to recognise that First Nations people were the original custodians of Australia. This type of racism comes in many different forms. These include the following:
- Stereotypical comments/actions
- Discrimination
- Bullying
- Hate speech
- Ignoring/not recognising cultural rights
To put it into perspective on how many First Nations people are fed up with this, 56% of people who believe Australia is a racist country are Aboriginal and TSI people. Here is an example of stereotypical racism:
"They’d ask the black ones, ‘What are you doing? Where are you goin’? What are you up to?′ We weren’t up to anything. We were just going to the movies. They wouldn’t ask the white ones that, the white girls with us, what they were doing. They only wanted to know what we’re doing. Then we’d get jack of that, we’d get frightened." - Beulah Pickwick, a First Nations Autralian.
or
"A couple of weeks after I was just driving along the road and I got pulled over by the police. They had the cheek to ask me, ‘Was it mine?’ because they found all that out in registration and everything else. It’s sad because, as I say, they used to pull us over before when we had an old car to see if they could find something wrong with it. And they’d pull you up in a new car and they’d think you had stolen it." - Netta Tyson, a First Nations Australian
No Aboriginal or TSI people should ever have to experience this, and live in fear because of their heritage, race, and/or culture.
By signing this petition, you are contributing to justice, standing up for fairness, respect, and unity. Together, with all our combined voices, we can ensure that all Australians, including First Nations people, are heard, respected, and treated with their dignity and rights.
