ARBOUR LAKE COMMUNITY UPDATE: WHAT'S NEW?

Calgary Subdivision and Development Appeal Board ("SDAB") Hearing Date set for June 5, 2025.

Hello, and Happy Spring!

This notice is for everyone who kindly added their voice to our petition last summer, when ATCO announced their land use change application. This update is about ATCO's proposed development and our community's attempts to stop it, and how you can help challenge these plans.

The recent approval by the City of Calgary means ATCO is now one step closer to their plan to build a large multi-unit development on top of their decommissioned natural gas release site. In January 2025, an unfortunate 7-6 decision was made by the City of Calgary to help further ATCO's plans to impose 4, 3-storey buildings into our quiet residential community. The decision gives ATCO the green light to offload an unsellable surplus natural gas site and leave all of the negative consequences and loss for our community to live with.

To add insult to injury, the information City Council used to reach the decision was not comprehensive. Had Council considered all of the facts to inform their decision, the land use change would never have passed.

With this in mind, and with the full support of the Arbour Lake Community Association, we have no choice but to fight the outcome from the January 14th hearing.

ATCO has lawyers and an inexhaustible supply of funding to oppose our fight. WE CANNOT GIVE UP. Our only remaining hope to stop ATCO is to appeal this decision.

To ensure our success, we have been working behind the scenes, securing the services of reputable counsel to represent the Arbour Lake Community and greenspace from ATCO's irresponsible and greed-driven plans:

  1. We have submitted an appeal to the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board ("SDAB") on behalf of the Arbour Lake Community. The cost of filing the appeal was $200. Countless hours and administrative costs have already gone into our efforts.
  2. On April 17, 2025 our community members represented the Arbour Lake Community by participating in the initial hearing to opposed ATCO's plans at City Hall where City Council approved ATCO's land use designation change by a vote of 7-6.
  3. On April 14, 2025 The Arbour Lake Community filed the Appeal with the SDAB. The SDAB has scheduled a merit hearing, where our counsel will present our case on Thursday June 5, 2025 (should we be able to raise sufficient funds for representation).
  4. The submission deadline for the appeal to the SDAB is 12 noon on May 28, 2025.
  5. Our Community Appeal working group has initiated a Go-Fund-Me page. If you can donate $5 or any other amount, we encourage you to help if you are able.
