Replace "Tissue" With Michael Rosen's "Chocolate Cake" in AQA power and conflict poetry

The Issue

The poem "Tissue" has been terrorising students for many years now, and, whilst not inherently a bad poem, it does not fit into the established themes in the cluster, which does make it very difficult to compare it to other poems, which is necessary in the poetry question. I believe that a more recognisable and possibly more sophisticated and easier poem to use is Michael Rosen's classic poem; "Chocolate cake". This poem fits with the core themes in the cluster, such as memories and the power of time, with obvious links being to "The Prelude" and "The Emigrée" which are clearly absent with Tissue's tendency to be in a "vacuum" compared to the other, much more link-able poems. Furthermore, "Chocolate Cake" is a poem that holds a great deal of nostalgia to many GCSE students, which is also a key theme in the anthology, therefore making the theme of nostalgia that is evident in the poem seem more believable as we feel nostalgia whilst reading it, which "Tissue" fails to accomplish with many students; a strong, emotional bond. Furthermore, the unique structure of the poem, with many short lines strung together, also provides an interesting balance in structure which admittedly was one of the few pieces of evidence that could be used for "Tissue", thus not throwing the anthology into unbalance. Finally, the poem is much more enjoyable for many teachers to teach, due to "Chocolate Cake" being widely loved and understandable to many students whilst the themes and ideas in "Tissue" can confuse students, making it unlikable and thus, not as adequate for such a poetry anthology as this.
