Apple bring back the iBook G3 Clamshell design aesthetic with modern specifications!
The Issue
Are you tired of lame, boring Macbooks?
There was a time when Apple made fun, exciting, aesthetically pleasing and adventurous products... now everything is a boring aluminum slab just like every other computer on the market.
With the upcoming release of the Apple Silicon M3 chip Apple has the perfect opportunity to revive the iBook branding and create a new laptop for the people! Call it the "iBook M3" with a design inspired by the original iBook G3 Clamshell model.
Why would Apple want to do this? Mac sales are currently down 40%... I suspect this is a combination of people not feeling a need/desire to upgrade from their current machines. As well as the extreme pricing of the Macbook lineup, which makes it unobtainable for many people, especially during these tough financial times.
Of course the Macbook lineup of products is a premium lineup which cannot be tainted as it is intended for professional settings... However, by reviving the iBook branding alongside the Macbook branding, Apple could allow for a more budget oriented design and manufacturing approach. One that is also fun and exciting while still differentiating between the two product lineups. This would allow them to better serve different demographics thus increasing their overall market share.
Read the proposal below, and if you think this is a good idea and would like Apple to make this a reality, please support this petition!
Design proposal to Apple Inc:
- Price range: $999-$1199 USD
- Take substandard M3 chips from the fab and cut them down to a smaller version to use for the iBook lineup. Call it the "M3 Lite" or something similar. Salvaging otherwise unusable chips will increase yields and differentiate the product lineup.
- Base RAM should be 16GB to compete with PC alternatives
- Base SSD should be 512GB to compete with PC alternatives
- Use slower RAM and slower SSD flash modules to offset costs and differentiate the product lineup
- 13.3" 16:10 1200p IPS LCD panel instead of OLED/Mini-LED to reduce costs and differentiate the product lineup
- Basic 1080p webcam instead of the Face id array to reduce costs and differentiate the product lineup
- Touch id power button to offset lack of Face id
- Magsafe Power Connector
- Include both USB-C and USB-A ports (the plastic construction will be thicker, so no excuse for it lacking USB-A ports)
- Headphone jack
- Clear plastic backlit keyboard mimicking that of the original iBook G3 Clamshell
- Clear colored plastic chassis construction mimicking that of the original iBook G3 Clamshells but with modern improvements
- iBook G3 Clamshell style carry handle would be great but is optional (may not be practical)
- Curves!!
NOTE: This is not meant to be a clone of the iBook G3 Clamshell but simply *inspired by it, this should have a modern layout but have organic curves and clear colored plastic!!
