The Issue

For years, I have passionately followed and supported professional wrestling. As an enthusiast, I recognize wrestling as a unique form of entertainment that masterfully combines athleticism with rich storytelling. Like many fans, I have been disheartened by the misunderstanding and outdated regulations imposed upon this art form by the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC).

Professional wrestling, unlike other regulated sports, is choreographed and predetermined, not unlike the stunt work seen in theater, television, or live action films. Despite its scripted nature, it is still considered and regulated as an unsanctioned athletic contest in New York State. This classification places an unnecessary burden on independent wrestling promotions by imposing stringent licensing requirements and other regulatory costs that are not required of other live entertainment acts such as concerts or stage productions.

The current regulation does not reflect the nature and intent of professional wrestling, which has evolved dramatically over the decades. With the vibrant wrestling community and its growing audience in mind, we respectfully request legislation to remove professional wrestling from the oversight of the NYSAC. By treating it as scripted entertainment rather than a regulated combat sport, New York can foster an environment where independent promotions and performers can thrive, offering a platform for creativity, innovation, and economic activity.

Professional wrestling has inspired countless individuals and has had a lasting impact through its culture and storytelling. Adjusting the regulation in line with these principles not only acknowledges the art form and its supporters, but it also promotes freedom for artists to share their craft without undue restrictions.

Join us in calling for this change to ensure that professional wrestling is appropriately recognized as the form of entertainment that it truly is. Sign this petition to urge New York legislators to update the provisions and support the growth of professional wrestling in the state.
