Annatto is in almost everything, people with nut allergies. Beware
The Issue
Sign this to try and have them stop putting annatto in everything. Are you eating things that does not have nuts in it but you are having an allergic reaction similar to tree nut allergy but don't know why? Look into annatto!! What’s Annatto you may ask? Annatto is a type of food coloring made from the seeds of the achiote tree (Bixa orellana). Annatto is an orange/ red food coloring or condiment made from the seeds which grows in tropical regions in South and Central America. Annatto is used as a condiment to enhance the flavor of dishes due to its slightly sweet and peppery taste. Its aroma is best described as nutty, peppery, and floral. Speaking of nutty, People with peanut allergies have reported having reactions to annatto. AND it isn't on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's list of nuts. some people with peanut or nut sensitivities do report having reactions to annatto. There has not been any large-scale study done on annatto allergy, although there are a few case studies of anaphylaxis due to annatto in the medical literature. Annatto isn't currently classified as a tree nut, so food manufacturers are not required to put a nut warning label on foods that contains annatto. They are, however, required to list annatto in the ingredient list. It’s more common than you think, reason I have create this is for others with a peanut allergy to be careful, and maybe try to ease down on putting annatto in our everyday food. I was having a reaction for a few months double checking foods and snacks thinking I ate peanuts when it all came down to one and it was annatto and it’s in almost everything. I’m scared going out to eat, now I got to research more and more of what I eat. Nervous to eat at others homes. Which can be upsetting
