Animals Matter - Phase out meat production

Animals Matter - Phase out meat production

There are many reasons for vegetarian diet
* Certain species are honored at homes like cats, dogs while the others cows, chicken, pigs, fishes are farmed for food - this is a big cruelty gap to resolve
* Humans not setups for meat eating. The longer intestines for herbivores and humans implies non-veg food stays and gets bad in intestines. There are other reasons as in shape of teeth, etc
* Environmental impact of livestock farming are moving earth to a dangerous situation. We need to phase out non vegetarian (meat, poultry, fish) production, consumption, import/export starting with a 50% reduction by 2022-2024.
* Vegetarians appear to have lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure and lower rates of hypertension and type 2 diabetes than meat eaters. Vegetarians also tend to have a lower body mass index, lower overall cancer rates and lower risk of chronic disease. [webmd.com]
* According to the American Dietetic Association, "appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases." [Health Harvard]

THE PROBLEM
•Humans eat 230m tonnes of meat each year
Read what happens in slaughter houses at animal equality
•The four species – chickens, cows, sheep and pigs – need vast amounts of food and water, emit methane and other greenhouse gases and produce mountains of physical waste
•Environment waste and emissions account for up-to 50% from livestock farming
•The oil burned transporting meat to markets often thousands of miles away
•The electricity needed to keep the meat cool,
•The gas used to cook it,
•The energy needed to plough and harvest the fields that grow the crops that the animals eat, even pumping the water that the cattle need
•A family living off rice, beans, vegetables and fruit may live on an acre of land or less, while the person who consumes around 270 pounds of meat a year, needs 20 times that.
•Water usage higher for livestock cultivation
•A pound of potato, rice maize takes 60-200 lbs of water
•A pound of cow meat takes 20,000 lbs of water
•Farming water impacts water available to cities
•Moving agro business to other countries increases pressure in those meat producing countries
•Deforestation – 6m hectares of land worldwide converted for livestock farming
•Waste from livestock can leak into rivers
•There is no medical reason to eat meat
•Non-vegetarian dishes are more expensive in restaurants due to cost of acquiring the ingredients, making the dish and cleanup/mess thereafter
•People being used to eating meat
SOLUTION
•Create a country wide and global task force to phase out meat, poultry and seafood production and consumption - reduce 50% mass production by 2022-24
•Improve the dietary guidelines, educate in schools and colleges
•Increase vegetarian and vegan cooking and education in culinary institutes, homes and via media
•Partner with WHO, UN, vegetarian, vegan and other institutions to enforce these practices worldwide
