Animal Cruelty/Testing Concerns

The Issue

The ban of cosmetic testing on animals took effect on December 22, 2023 in Canada.

This is a great start on a path to a cruelty free nation, but we need to do so much more than to create a ban. Animal cruelty and cosmetics testing is still alive in Canada.

1)   Canada is still importing cosmetic brands that are not cruelty free such as Mac L’Oriel, Dior, CeraVe and Gucci. Companies like Sephora don’t want to get their hands dirty so instead of testing on animals, they pay other people to test on animals using their product.

By buying these brands and making them relevant, we are contributing to this issue. This law applies to newer companies, while older companies get away with the law. If we want to outlaw animal testing/cruelty we need to outlaw these cosmetic brands that are not certified cruelty free by PETA.

2)   Humans get to choose whether to bury their body in a grave or dedicate their body to scientific research. On average 6-12 million animals are used for dissections every year. I am very unfortunate to say this but, I too participated in this cruel ritual of dissection. These frogs and pigs were never given a choice whether to use their body for scientific research. Just like humans, animals also deserve some self respect for their dying bodies. We can educate these students through other resourceful tools.

Medical testing does help society in discovering new things, but we also have technology, a way more resourceful tool to help us uncover what we want to know. You can always search for a frog dissection anatomy or a simulation online.

3)   Canada does not give enough jail time for animal abusers. September 2023 Aleeta Raugust, a 26 year old woman was pleaded guilty on 9 charges of animal abuse, she brutally tortured 9 cats, killing 7 of them.

She only received a 6.5 year sentence. The crown wanted her in prison for 8-10 years and lifelong prohibition of owning animals. But, the judge said it would be ….to severe.

These people are not receiving harsh enough punishments for animal abuse and after 6.5 years she’ll come out of prison with another animal and repeat the cycle all over again. Because if you do it once, it will happen again.

Canada is a great country but it's not doing a great job holding these horrible people accountable for their actions.

Canada…..we need more jail time for animal abusers, 15 to 20 years max. We need to feed the issue of animal cruelty in the people mindset, every action has an equal consequence.

4)    “Four out of five rabbits bought as pets for Easter are abandoned or die within a year”......their lifespan is 10 to 12 years. We are allowing these people to buy animals without knowing what will happen to these animals, either good or bad. We should think of adopting an animal like adopting a human.

Adopting a child in Ontario takes 8 months to a year. Parents must undergo Pride training or complete a SAFE home study evaluation, they are evaluated on their resources, parents and are then matched with a child. After two years SAFE home studies wants updates, like criminal status, and medical reports. The adoption will be approved by the Children's Aid Society. Long term interventions like this prevents issues like child abuse, though child abuse does happen strict rules to adoptions prevent it form happening.

It takes 45 minutes to adopt an animal at most, without a proper evaluation. Some humane societies have started investigating owners, but we need to name this a law for everyone abuser or not.  We never know what will happen to the animal until it's too late. We need to make sure the animals live in a loving home by getting local Animal Humane Societies to inspect the owner and the living conditions by law, just like adopting a person. Though it may be a long process, this could unmask who is really there for the long haul.

Owners need to be serious with their decision to have a pet and not inflict torture and cosmetic companies doing testings. Animal testing is still an abuse of one's animal rights.

I am reaching out to you, to the policy makers to act upon these issues, make it a law to inspect owners of animals, come to schools and educate youth on being kind to animals. Ban dissections in Ontario. Implement harsh punishments against animal abusers. Choose cruelty free brands to import. We need to do something about this issue, I do not believe that a federal ban is enough to fix an issue, we need to implement long term interventions in order to reach our goal as a cruelty free nation.
