Amend UK Law to end refusal of service in Establishments without a valid reason
The Issue
Having worked in the hospitality industry for approximately 10 years, I've continually faced bullying, prejudice, racism, hate, and harassment as a member of staff due to my ethnicity and culture as part of the Irish Travelling community. I however am not the only one, i have continuously witnessed fellow members of my community including children refused entry and service for no apparent reason other than that they are a member of the travelling community and are given countless false excuses such as "we have had problems with travellers before" "you are barred from another establishment" (without providing evidence of this) or "we do not need or have to give you a reason not to serve you". This pervasive discrimination has deeply affected my mental health, making me feel unworthy and unwelcome, fueling a sense of imposter syndrome, as if being an Irish Traveller was something to be ashamed of. But I am proud of my heritage and believe in challenging the unfair treatment myself and other members of my community has experienced.
Currently, UK establishments such as pubs, clubs, bars, restaurants, and leisure centres possess the legal right to refuse service to anyone without providing a valid reason. This legal loophole unfortunately allows for discrimination against the Gypsy, Roma, and Irish Travelling community, manifesting as unjust denial of service under the guise of legal legitimacy.
Despite the Equality & Diversity Act 2010, which makes it unlawful to discriminate against ethnic groups with protected characteristics, the present loophole undermines this protection, leaving the Gypsy, Roma, and Irish Travelling community vulnerable to prejudice and racism.
To foster real inclusivity and equality in the UK, it's crucial that these establishments be required to provide valid reasons for refusal of service. An amendment to current legislation must close this loophole—requiring businesses to justify service refusals with legitimate and genuine reasons will help protect minority communities and hold establishments accountable for discriminatory practices.
Revising this aspect of UK law is not only a step towards upholding the values enshrined in the Equality & Diversity Act 2010 but also essential in promoting a fairer society free from racial prejudice.
Join me in demanding this critical change. Please sign this petition to implore lawmakers to amend current laws and ensure non-discriminatory practices in service establishments across the UK.
