Amend the Ohio Homestead Exemption to Lower Real Estate Taxes for Seniors and Disabled

Amend the Ohio Homestead Exemption to Lower Real Estate Taxes for Seniors and Disabled
The Issue
Personal reflection shapes this urgent call for change. Generations before us worked strenuously, helping build our communities into what they are today, while those challenged with disabilities carry a unique burden. The Homestead Act has provided critical financial relief to these precious members of our community by reducing their state property tax obligations. This act is not just about economics; it's about keeping families in homes, building stronger and more resilient communities.
In Ohio, our elders above 65 years old as well as our permanently and fatally disabled members, who are already under financial strain, are unnecessarily burdened by property taxes. The existing Ohio Homestead Exemption scheme only insulates against a portion of the home's market value. This is insufficient and we propose an increment.
We ask for an amendment to the Ohio Homestead Exemption. We urge the relevant authorities to exempt up to $50,000 of the market value of homes belonging to our seniors and our disabled from local property taxes. We propose that homeowners with a total household income of $70,000 or less be declared eligible for this exemption. We further request that any homeowner in Portage County who owns and occupies a home as their principal residence as of January 1st of the current tax year should qualify.
This amendment will provide much needed relief from the crushing weight of tax on our seniors and those suffering from disabilities. It will protect homes during crises such as foreclosures and bankruptcies. This act will help ensure that our communities continue to thrive and that we are doing the utmost to support our most vulnerable. The time has come to amplify our voices and make a change. Let us join hands to ensure that our seniors and disabled homeowners continue to be active and valued contributors to our society. Sign the petition and call for an amendment to the Ohio Homestead Exemption today.
