Amend Ontario traffic rules to protect truck drivers
The Issue
For the past 15 years, I have been proudly operating my truck on the roads of Ontario without a single ticket or safety infraction, holding myself to the highest standards of road safety and professionalism. Despite this impeccable record, Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, specifically Section 158, have put my career and livelihood in jeopardy.
The act stipulates that commercial vehicles must allow a 60-metre distance when following an automobile. While this might sound reasonable at first glance, in real-world conditions it is often difficult, if not impossible, to maintain such a distance, particularly in busy traffic or during rush hour. Recently, during blitz operations, I have been ticketed three times in a row by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) simply because of this mandatory 60-metres rule. Moreover, the infraction was evidenced solely in an aerial photograph that was taken in a moment that does not explain the truth of the scenario whereby a car had pulled in front of me reducing the safe distance that had been otherwise maintained.
These tickets have not only put undue financial strain on me but have also threatened my ability to work, with the prospect of a suspended license looming over me. If I lose my license, I could also lose my home, my sole means of supporting my family. This rule, rather than improving safety, has become a tool to target hard-working truck operators like me who strive to perform our duties safely and efficiently.
According to Transport Canada, the trucking industry is critical to the nation's economy, employing over 300,000 drivers and facilitating the safe and timely delivery of goods. However, current regulations like Section 158 do not align with the practical realities of driving large commercial vehicles on busy Ontario roads.
I urge the government of Ontario to review and amend Section 158 of the Highway Traffic Act. A possible solution could be revising the required distance or offering truck drivers more discretion based on actual traffic conditions. Such a change would not only protect truck drivers from unfair penalties but would also enhance overall road safety by aligning traffic laws with real-world scenarios.
Please join me in calling for this necessary change to protect Ontario's truck drivers. Your support and signature can help ensure that responsible, skilled operators like myself can continue safely doing their jobs without fear of unjust punishment. Sign the petition today!
