Amend North Carolina Law to Implicate Informants Selling Fentanyl-Laced Drugs

Amend North Carolina Law to Implicate Informants Selling Fentanyl-Laced Drugs
The Issue
In May 2020, my son Ethan Abbot tragically lost his life after unknowingly purchasing cocaine laced with fentanyl from an informant who still remains uncharged. This deeply personal incident has thrown into stark relief the urgent need to change the law in North Carolina.
Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2021). Its lethal nature, combined with the increasing prevalence of it being mixed with other substances, is contributing to a deadly reality for many North Carolinians. In 2019, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a significant rise in overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids in North Carolina.
Under the current law, informants are largely shielded from facing the consequences of their actions. However, we believe this needs to change. We're calling for North Carolina to amend its laws to hold such informants fully accountable, especially when their information is directly linked to deaths from fentanyl-laced drugs. This will provide justice for victims like Ethan, and deter potential trafficking of lethal, adulterated substances.
Please help us ensure that Ethan’s tragic death was not in vain, and that no other parent has to endure such indescribable pain. Sign this petition to endorse the change in North Carolina law that will hold informants accountable for their actions.
